The Bases of Speech Pathology and Audiology: Evaluation as the Resolution of Uncertainty
Martin C. Schultz · Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders · 1973
This paper proposes that evaluation be viewed as a process for resolving uncertainty in the examiner, in accordance with the measurement and evaluation of uncertainty in information theory. Evaluation, then, can be considered a process of generating hypotheses (tentative evaluative outcomes) and manipulating their relative probabilities. The examination procedures serve as tests of these hypotheses so as to alter their relative probabilities. When the various observations reduce the viable hypotheses to a single one, the examiner concludes the evaluation.
