An Unusual Minimization Principle for Parabolic Gradient Flows

Lawrence Craig Evans · SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis · 1996

We show that for a general parabolic system, generated as the gradient flow of a rank-one convex energy functional, the energy at any time is less than or equal to the energy “smoothly sampled” at earlier times. This generalizes the classical assertion that energy cannot increase along flows.
