In 1975, Schroeder proposed an interesting method to construct diffusers based on a specific reflectivity distribution according to maximum length sequences. In 1977, this method was refined by replacing the maximum length sequences by a quadratic residue code. In this paper we will show that Schroeder’s approach is debatable. An improved theoretical treatment will be given and numerical results will be shown. From our results it will be clear that design of optimum diffusers is significantly more complicated than suggested in the literature.
