Musical instrument transducers—Present applications and future potential

John F. Berry · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1980

Since their introduction several years ago, transducers designed to function with specific musical instruments have continued to receive increasing acceptance and widespread use for critical sound reinforcement and direct-feed recording applications. Sensors are now available for virtually all band and orchestral instruments and, through constant advances in this field of research, these transducers have achieved a level of design sophistication and performance capability which, in many instances, makes them a viable alternative to the use of traditional microphone technique. The parameters which can be used to determine the most appropriate pickup method for a given situation are discussed. The influence which this expanding transducer technology can be expected to have upon the development of new musical instruments is also considered.
