High-resolution filter bank for speech analysis

Robert Linggard, Norman D. Black · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1982

A digital filter bank is described which has been designed to be an approximate model of the basilar membrane. Designed from analog prototypes using the bilinear transformation, the bank consists of 145 4th-order bandpass filters on a log frequency scale with bandwidths according to physiologically determined values. The short-time, wide-band spectra available from this filter bank have been processed to give relatively accurate indications of periodic pitch. An essential part of this processing is the enhancement of pitch harmonics before using the spectral information in a matching procedure to measure pitch. This paper discusses its physiological plausibility. Some results of pitch tracking in continuous speech are given.
