Abstract This paper presents theoretical and experimental studies of the effect of noise on the speech spectrum. It is shown that the logarithmic spectrum is not suitable for the features of noisy speech because it is sensitive to stochastic noise effects when the signal‐to‐noise ratio is low. A new distance measure for spoken word recognition is proposed which is effective in evaluating the distance between the reference and the input under the influence of noise. Experiments in noisy word recognition show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
