Using MATLAB for sparse matrices

George R. Lindfield, J.E.T. Penny · International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology · 1997

This paper provides an introduction to the facilities for sparse matrices available in version 4 of MATLAB. Sparse matrices arise in many problems of science and engineering, for example in the solution of large linear programming problems and in the analysis of structures. Indeed, most large matrices that arise in the analysis of physical systems are sparse and the recognition of this fact greatly improves the efficiency of the solution of smaller linear systems and makes the solution of very large linear systems feasible.
