In a previous experiment, J. Olive and L. Pols [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. Suppl. 1 66, S23 (1979)] reported on the intelligibility of speech generated by dyadic rule synthesis. Their analyses showed that significant improvements in intelligibility could be gained from a more optimal choice of the method of choosing both the dyads and the parameters of the dyads themselves. The present paper describes a quantitative method for choosing better dyads and results from an experiment using the improved dyad set. We measured the intelligibility of initial and final consonants in CVC words, using 11 different vowels. Two other conditions were tested for comparison; PCM-coded speech (12 bits, 10-kHz rate) and LPC-resynthesized speech (12 parameters).
