The serious degradation of underwater image is the result of light scattering by particles, and light absorption causes the color attenuation. Thus, the task of underwater enhancement is improving the visibility and restoring the color by removing undesirable effect during the process of imaging. In this paper, we review the current research development of underwater image processing and classify the approaches into two categories: image restoration and image enhancement. We elaborate the model hypothesis and classification of these two methods, and also comparatively analyze advantages, disadvantages and applicable scenes of each.
