not adequate for all the combinations of vowels and diacritics needed for Portuguese. Certain software packages, however, offer adequate, if inconvenient, solutions for this deficiency. The problem lies not in printing the Portuguese words, but rather in displaying the special characters on the monitor. Neither 5 nor 6 are included in IBM's standard code, and most of the upper-case vowels with diacritics are lacking as well. Since 5 (appearing in ndo, and numerous words like nagdo and razdo) and 6 (in na6des, raz6es, and so forth) occur frequently, their absence is its greatest shortcoming.
