NEW METHODS FOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF FINITE STATE SYSTEMS
Robert Gerardy · International Journal of General Systems · 1989
This paper develops a set of new algorithms for the identification of various classes of finite state systems. The new algorithms are designed to be much more efficient than the previously available methods. However, since they are based on the use of a heuristic, they are not guaranteed to produce the optimum model for a given data system for a given number of states. A set of experiments was conducted to verify that the new methods are, indeed, more efficient. The experiments also indicate that the new algorithms are able to identify satisfactory models for the data systems, although perhaps requiring more states than the optimum.
