Intermodulation Distortion Produced by Center Clipping

Recently, center clipping has been used in a number of speech processing systems [O. M. M. Mitchell and D. A. Berkley, J. Acoust. Soc. Amer. 47, 84 (1970); O. M. M. Mitchell and D. A. Berkley, Bell System Tech. J. 50, 1619–1630 (1971)]. In this paper, we apply Bennett's double Fourier series technique [H. E. Rowe, Signals and Noise in Communication Systems (Van Nostrand, Princeton, N. J., 1965)] to obtain integral expressions for the distortion products of two center clipping transfer functions for the case of two simultaneous sinusoidal inputs at arbitrary frequencies. Results of numerical solutions are presented for six clipping levels and six values of relative amplitude of the two sinusoidal inputs.
