The ‘basic idea’ of John A. Hawkins' theory is the intuition ‘that words and constituents occur in the order they do so that syntactic groupings and their immediate constituents (ICs) can be recognized (and produced) as rapidly and efficiently as possible in language performance’ (1994:57).
