The dynamical characteristics of a loudspeaker have been obtained utilizing a fiber-optic displacement transducer and a sound level meter. The diaphragm behavior below and in the vicinity of resonance readily demonstrates the analogy to a series RLC resonant circuit where the loudspeaker cone can be treated as a vibrating piston in an infinite baffle. Invoking the properties of a damped, driven harmonic oscillator the amplitude maxima of displacement and velocity at resonance are defined in terms of their respective frequencies. The results provide a convenient method for the determination of the mechanical resistance, stiffness constant, and quality factor.
