Computers and geophysical exploration are even more intimately connected than are oil and politics. For more than 40 years, theoretical ideas for advancing the usefulness of geophysical exploration have been far ahead of the practical capabilities of computers to carry them out. For the past 25 years, the leading edge of exploration geophysics has advanced only as fast as digital computer availability would allow.
