A Modified Frontal Technique Suitable for Parallel Systems
Rami Melhem · SIAM Journal on Scientific and Statistical Computing · 1988
Frontal techniques offer the potential for processing the assembly and the factorization phases of finite element analysis in parallel. However, frontal solvers suggested so far involve rather complex bookkeeping and data manipulation, and thus are lacking the uniformity desired for vector and parallel processing. On the other hand, band solution techniques are very simple and uniform, but do not interleave assembly and factorization. In this paper, we suggest a window-oriented organization of the frontal method which is attractive to both sequential and parallel processing. Our goal is to obtain an implementation of a frontal solver which is as simple as the implementations of band solvers.
