FITS: A generic framework for intelligent tutoring systems

Abstract This paper summarizes the research result up to the present concerning the generic framework FITS for ITS. FITS is composed of six building blocks, which are teaching‐material‐independent, and the scheduler to realize the flexible teaching process. By developing the generic framework reflecting the essential task structure of ITS, the manpower needed in developing ITS can be reduced. This paper describes the design philosophy of the generic framework FITS and the mechanisms of the building blocks using the case of the teaching of geography as an example.
