Particles, quarks, leptons and coloured glue
Lewis H. Ryder · Physics Education · 1980
Explains the current situation in particle physics. For this purpose it is convenient to consider separately three periods in the development of the subject. This corresponds roughly to a historical approach, but is not entirely that. In the first period things looked comparatively simple, but this simplicity was deceptive. Next, things got much more complicated; and finally, in the new synthesis, things are again simple.
