Thoughts on Language and Speaking

Morris Halle · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1968

A speaker's and hearer's knowledge of the language in which an utterance is produced plays a fundamental rôle in the understanding of the utterance. An attempt will be made to assess somewhat more precisely what knowledge of the language may contribute to understanding. A number of illustrative examples will be analyzed, and an attempt will be made to draw some inferences concerning the significance of these facts for further work on the automatic processing of speech.
