During the first meeting of the IGU/ICA Joint Working Group on Map Use, it was deemed necessary to deal with the terminology and the French translation of this polysemous term. Map use, as it is understood in France allows one to determine the field of research for this group. An overview of a number of French-language publications on this theme demonstrates evolution of the concept of map use.
