Within the past decade, the nature of the Internet has changed from an academic and research-orientated communication medium to a booming business infrastructure. Along with the flourish of commercial World Wide Web sites has come an intensified interest in a new form of money which can be electronically exchanged over the Internet. Given the history of money, with its evolution from barter to proxies to paper notes, cheques and automated transfers, the innovation of electronic money was perhaps inevitable, although its widespread acceptance is uncertain.
