A listen‐before‐transmission random access technique using priority structure

Jin‐Fu Chang · Journal of the Chinese Institute of Engineers · 1981

A listen‐before‐transmission random access technique using priority structure is proposed in this paper. The ALOHA community is divided into several priorities. Any ready user is allowed to release a packet only if he feels that none of the higher priority users has a packet to transmit. This priority scheme is particularly useful for a community consisting of users of nonuniform traffic characteristics. It is found that the performance is greatly improved compared to that of the slotted ALOHA. The performance is also comparable to that of the Carrier Sense Multiple Access technique proposed by Kleinrock and Tobagi.
