An auxiliary recording system for the Perkin-Elmer Model 21 Spectrophotometer has been developed to provide simultaneous tracing by electronic means on 812×11 in. paper. The entire mechanical range of the basic instrument is covered, providing a procedure readily adaptable to any prism and presenting absorption phenomena on any abscissa-ordinate scale. The dual trace is made without adversely affecting the performance of the basic instrument. Excellent resolution is achieved throughout the 2 to 15-micron range. In addition a secondary time-base drive system, operating integrally with the basic instrument, has been developed to provide an intermittent signal to the drum-axis of the auxiliary recorder. Thus, cyclic measurements of absorption phenomena are presented as a succession of progressively altered traces of absorption peaks. The reduced spectral traces provide condensed charts for cataloging, facilitate reference and comparison studies, and are useful in the preparation of reports.
