Analyses of large-scale grouping structures in several movements by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven demonstrate a technique of segmentation by initiation. Although the patterning thus revealed is not metrical in the strictest sense, exact proportional schemes and perfect symmetries in formal designs project deep rhythms of another variety.
