In this paper we describe an automated Millikan‐type apparatus used to test small liquid drops for fractional electric charge. Results of recent measurements are given, including the first direct observations with sea water. In 0.36 μg of sea water, we have observed no fractional charges. We have measured 500 times more water than Millikan, and it seems likely that an uncertain measurement of fractional charge reported by Millikan should be discounted.
