Relations between tone, pitch, harmony and consonance

Adrianus J. M. Houtsma · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1981

The concepts of pitch, consonance, and harmony are considered from a musical as well as from a psychoacoustical viewpoint. Relations between pitch and frequency for pure and complex tones are reviewed, and modern pitch theories are discussed. The issue of consonance versus dissonance is treated in the light of theories by Helmholtz, Rameau, and Schonberg, and modern psychophysical evidence. The discussion is augmented by sound demonstrations.
