AN UNDERGRADUATE SEMINAR EMPHASIZING ORAL PRESENTATION OF RESEARCH MATHEMATICS

Deborah S. Franzblau · PRIMUS · 1992

An undergraduate seminar in mathematics, featuring student lectures on advanced material, is an excellent way to introduce students to reading journal articles and graduate level texts, and to teach them to give oral presentations. These skills are important for all students. Here I give details of planning and running such a course, describing my experience using topics in theoretical computer science. Two guides for students are included which have proven very useful in teaching seminars. One gives students basic techniques for reading papers in mathematics, and the other leads students through giving an oral presentation.
