Architecting Solutions for Scalable Databases in Cloud
Gitanjali Sharma, Pankaj Deep Kaur · 2015
Owing to technological proliferation and data deluging, the extent of scalability which cloud databases can accomplish is a long fostered dream for applications which support high levels of availability, consistency, elasticity and reliability. Scaling cloud databases implies scaling ACID guarantees over geographically distributed and replicated data stores which is hard to achieve since such applications prefer availability over strong consistency. Past decades have witnessed many architecting decisions and solutions in view of this challenge like partitioning, replications, concurrency control mechanisms and consistency. This paper presents a brief description of these architecting solutions implemented so far and discusses the challenges faced under the ongoing research and development in this domain.
