Abstract The performance of dual‐hop multiple‐input multiple‐output relay systems with transmit beamforming and maximum‐ratio combining scheme for each hop is investigated. Both the relay and the destination are subjected to multiple possible unequal‐power co‐channel interferences (CCIs). We provide a mathematical framework for evaluating the combined effect of multiple antennas and CCIs. An exact closed‐form outage probability expression is derived for the independent Rayleigh fading channels. Furthermore, the asymptotic analysis for the outage probability is also presented to offer more insights into the system diversity order. The results show that although the diversity order is limited by the minimum of the numbers of antennas at the source and the destination, it is essentially directly proportional to the number of antennas at the relay, which provides a further insight into the system design. Moreover, at high signal‐to‐interference ratio regime, CCIs do not affect the diversity order.Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
