Abstract The wavelet transform is a signal transformation technique in which the information in the time and frequency domains can be obtained simultaneously within the range of the uncertainty principle. In this paper, identification of impulse responses is performed using the wavelet transform. First, the system identification problem is studied by using the wavelet theory. It is shown by a numerical example that the high‐frequency components of the signal can be separated in the time domain from the noise provided the weighting function is chosen suitably. Finally, the role of the weighting function is discussed theoretically.
