Performance of self-encoded spread spectrum with iterative detection for GNSS applications

Austin E. Steiner, Lim Nguyen, Won Mee Jang · 2012

Self-encoded spread spectrum (SESS) has been shown to provide significant advantages for communications in fading or jamming environments. With the proliferation of GNSS such as GPS, Galileo, and GLONASS, it would be desirable to bring the advantages of SESS to these systems. In order to do this the iterative detector in a receiver must be able to provide a high-quality timing estimate. Presented is an analysis of the timing measurement error for an SESS receiver's iterative detector, as well as a detailed description of a code reordering scheme to enhance such a receiver's measurement accuracy. The combined detectors in such a system are shown to halve the mean squared error of the timing measurement accuracy.
