Programming Systems for Analytical Developments on Computers

Morgan Davis · The Astronomical Journal · 1968

Programming languages for carrying out nonnumerical applications on computers are reviewed. In general, it is indicated that high-level languages allow less flexibility to the user but are easier to learn and apply, while low-level languages permit great flexibility but require considerably more knowledge, very often that of the assembly language and basic instructions of the computer. Because of these advanced develop- ments and the exciting possibilities they offer, astronomers are urged to consider these techniques as regular "tools of the trade."
