In the last decade, many Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) have been built, but few people use them. One reason is that the "theory of tutoring" represented in these systems is often based on researchers' intuitive theories of tutoring rather than on empirical data that describes true tutoring expertise. Very little empirical data exist for one–on–one tutoring, however, and methods for increasing this body of knowledge are not well–defined.
