No universally accepted set of standards exist for the education or experience requirements for computer programming and data processing personnel to assume leadership positions in their profession. While various forms of certification have been implemented in other academically-oriented professionals for several decades, certification of data processing personnel is a relatively recent activity. However, recognition of the need for minimal qualification levels in data processing among the DP employers is becoming more apparent. One may read employment notices wherein holding a certificate in data processing is a qualification option.
