Survey of Modern Digital Correlation Techniques
Ira M. Langenthal · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1973
Although correlation techniques have been a known and accepted signal-processing technique for many years, it is only recently that the advent of digital technology has progressed to the point where an all-digital correlation processor can be built efficiently as an instrument. Although this emergence is nowhere near the breakthroughs resulting from the advent of FFT techniques, it has opened up many interesting areas of application. The background, present status, and future direction of digital correlation techniques will be outlined. The processing techniques utilized in the digital correlator will be described with particular emphasis being given to the flexibilities that are achievable and the attendant areas of application. Additionally, comparisons will be made between the FFT method of calculating correlation functions and that utilized by the direct method.
