With the development of computer and image processing techniques, the image processing techniques have been widely used in many of the medical applications for decades. Many of these applications are in the fields of microscopic diagnosis. This paper describes a cytological color image processing system developed for the detection of lung cancer cells in the examinees' sputum slides for the health inspection for lung cancers. The approach proposed here adopts mainly three kinds of features for the segmentation and classification of cells: chromatic, fractal and texture features. In this presentation, the chromatic features are mainly used for the segmentation of nuclei, and the fractal and texture features for the recognition of the cancer cells. At the same time, a hierarchical processing architecture is used for the whole processing procedure. The experiment results have show that the approach proposed here can perform properly in the detection of lung cancer cells.
