Correcting Two Long-Standing Errors in Point Group Symmetry Character Tables

Two long-standing errors in published point group character tables are examined. The first is the assignment in the S 8 point group of ( R x, R y ) to the E 1 irreducible representation rather than E 3 . The second is a reversal of column labeling of 2 S S and 2 S 8 3 classes in the D 8 h group character table. These errors may trace back to 1955 and 1971 publications, respectively.
