The Number of Generators of Finite Linear Groups

Let γ(G) denote the number of elements in a generating set, of least possible cardinality, of the finite group G. This note presents bounds on γ(G), for arbitrarily wide classes of finite linear groups over fields. The most general bounds given here do not appear to be the best possible.
