A graphical interface for data analysis

Interfaces for specifying to a computer program how it should analyze or plot data have traditionally employed verbal control languages typed at a keyboard or choices made from menus. We discuss here a graphical interface for this purpose, implemented on the Macintosh computer family. Graphical interfaces permit object-oriented interaction with the program, both avoiding problems of verbal languages and offering new capabilities. We explore some of these consequences.
