A concurrent debugger for iPSC/2 programmers

Wei-Cheng Pan, V. Jackson · 1988

Applications running on the iPSC®/2, a distributed-memory, message-passing concurrent supercomputer, are composed of multiple processes executing concurrently on different nodes of the system. Debugging such applications with traditional one-process debuggers, such as dbx, is simply inadequate. This paper describes a source level debugger, DECON, specifically designed to aid iPSC/2 programmers debug large concurrent applications written in C or FORTRAN. The major challenges of debugging such applications are discussed and the capabilities of DECON which address each challenge are described. To illustrate Deacon's ease of use and flexibility a simple iPSC/2 application is debugged.
