Contour extraction using a complex autoregressive model

Shinji Umeyama · Systems and Computers in Japan · 1997

Snakes is a technique for contour extraction from images. In Snakes, the contour extraction is controlled so that the contour is as smooth as possible, and it is sometimes difficult to make the contour converge to a complex undulating shape. In order to deal with such a problem, this paper proposes a method of introducing the contour model into Snakes for the individual shapes to be extracted. The contour model is the complex autoregressive model, which is a shape description model invariant to rotation, translation and scaling. Under this approach, the proposed method is a natural extension of the ordinary Snakes. The method is called “Snakes with Complex Autoregressive Model” (CARM-Snakes). Several experimental results are presented for artificial and actual images. © 1997 Scripta Technica, Inc. Syst Comp Jpn, 28 (1): 66–73, 1997
