The Shifting Global Landscapes of Things: Goodscapes
Paula Bello · Design and Culture · 2010
As a concept and as a framework, I constructed “Goodscapes” to weave theories from the social sciences and design for the study of the intersection between globalization, things, and design processes. Two key thinkers in globalization studies, Arjun Appadurai and Néstor García Canclini, are particularly relevant for design because their work directly and indirectly reflects the implications of accelerated global processes for the field. In conceiving Goodscapes, I push their contributions on material culture, identity, and globalization closer together in order to discover the shifting qualities, dynamics, and structures of the world of things. In conversation, we discuss Goodscapes as a central issue defining the present and future of design.
