An IS Audit Work Program on the Software Product Testing Process

Belden Menkus · EDPACS · 2001

Software product testing is the process of running new or revised programs to determine if they function as they are meant to do. Software products to be tested may be built inhouse, created under the terms of a contract with a thirdparty developer, or purchased as a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) offering. Before attempting to examine an or anization's software product testing process, the IT auditor should understand that process. This article provides a brief description of the place of software testing in the application development process, the responsibility for COTS product testing, the use of configuration management, the problems associated with testing COTS products, an explanation of the nature of software product testing, and a presentation of an IS audit work program to aid in an examination of the testing process.
