The origin of the abacus and its development

Since appearance of electric calculating machines and electronic computers, the abacus has been very frequently referred to in contemporary writings in the western world. Unfortunately, different authors in their fragmentary statements have attributed the development of the abacus to diverse origins, none being free from historical speculation. This paper presents the authentic origin of the abacus and its development.
