In their paper ‘‘Algorithm for extraction of pitch and pitch salience from complex tonal signals’’ [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 71, 679–688 (1982)], Terhardt et al. argue that virtual pitch theory can explain the competition between the so-called virtual and spectral pitch percepts evoked by a complex tonal stimulus. In this contribution we formulate some criticisms of essential features of their approach.
