Abstract In the perspective of global communications, new conception Wired‐Wireless systems aim at satisfying the user expectation of high performance services and the need for flexibility in the management of disparate categories of multimedia and multi‐requirement applications. This paper proposes an enhanced protocol architecture for the effective handling of multimedia tele services in an integrated wired‐wireless environment. The features of the proposed protocol framework are pointed out with special focus on control issues. Enhanced medium access algorithms, bandwidth allocation strategies, handover, and admission control procedures are embraced in the system functionality. These functions are mapped onto a layered architecture, covering the entire protocol stack proposed for a generic UMTS radio access system. The introduced functions are described in terms of their basic algorithms, signalling messages and control channels, and involved protocol entities, both on the user and control planes of the proposed protocol framework.
