Remote news dispatches over multi-channel GSM
Jason Neale · 1997
Remote news reporting via fixed telephones suffers from a lack of mobility and sound quality limitations. Four methods of returning enhanced quality audio (7-10 kHz) using GSM (Global System for Mobiles) multiple channels are presented. Subjective test results using mean opinion scores and delay budgets for each technique are shown. Information conveyed over two or more channels will arrive at different times; the probability of a given maximum mis-alignment delay and its effects on the audio quality if uncorrected are also examined. Techniques using packet numbering or noise correlation are considered and compared as realignment methods. Finally, the effects of increased round trip delay on a news dispatch are examined and found to be relatively insignificant in terms of subjective performance.
