Insight into operation of kulpa boundary distance measure

E. Roy Davies · Electronics Letters · 1991

Many object recognition schemes require accurate estimates of boundary distance. For some years the standard technique was to take diagonal steps as contributing √(2) pixel, and other steps as contributing 1 pixel. Kulpa found that this measure systematically over-estimates the boundary distance. This Letter studies the Kulpa estimator with the aim of obtaining a deeper insight into its operation.
