Dimensions of Listener Skill in Voice Rating
William D. Voiers · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1963
The coefficient of correlation rii, between ratings assigned voices by a single listener and the averages of ratings assigned by a group of listeners was taken as a criterion of the individual listener's skill in rating a given voice characteristic. Values of rii were calculated for 32 listeners on each of 20 rating dimensions (e.g., clear-hazy, loud-soft, heavy-light) that had previously been found adequate to account for the bulk of stimulus (voice) determined variability in listeners ratings of voices. Intercorrelations among the 20 items were calculated following a tanh−1 transformation of the obtained values of rii−. The resulting matrix of interitem coefficients of correlation was subjected to a factor analysis, which yielded five orthogonal “dimensions of voice-rating skill.”
