Unveiling Schoenberg's op. 33b
Brian Alegant · Music Theory Spectrum · 1996
This article examines Schoenberg's Klavierstück, op. 33b, from a partitional perspective. The analysis uses the construct of the mosaic to show how dyadic, tetrachordal and trichordal partitions articulate formal divisions and achieve continuity and closure on both small and large scales. It demonstrates that the brute-force repetition of materials creates a coherent surface structure, and that deviations from the normative partitioning schemes offer insight into the underlying compositional strategies.
